In one of the seminars entrepreneurs were advised to have larger than life goals. During group discussion a gentleman mentioned that most of today’s generation is happy with his or her achievements and don’t want to challenge them to expand their limits, anyways exceptions are always there and it was just his point of view to bring discussion further. As a child my NCC teacher Mrs. Rajni Khanna who was a good friend of my mother mentioned to me that if you aim for first division you will get second. It is not said as a quote but to make us understand that achieving what u wish needs to be taken extra care.
I read somewhere, “the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it but it is too low and we reach it”. My yoga teacher saras taught us to “hold our goal lightly with half open hands (cupped hands) and not with a fist”. Holding with fist, you may lose it or it might disappear or you might get tired with the tightness of fist. I have been happily practicing it for 13 years; it never failed me rather gave scope to other opportunities to enter in and at times giving space to the urgent needs to be taken care of.
Here we are talking about larger-than-life goals. Goal which is beyond your limit but not imagination, which is difficult but not impossible, which is tiring but not without rewards, which is challenging but again life is full of unseen challenges and uncertainties. Many of us build a shell around us being in a comfort zone. These boundaries can be in any field. For few it can be a technical challenge, for few it can be lethargy stopping them from required action, for me it is socializing where I find it difficult to push me in a social circle. I love to be at home or in my ikebana /painting studio or with a laptop planning another book. And you know what you avoid, destiny also helps in that direction. Sometimes I sincerely want to attend some function but will end up in some emergency where my presence is unavoidable. These might not be under the boundaries of goal setting but are road blockers in different ways.
As far as setting a goal higher than your capacity is concerned, we all wish to get better than the best BUT yes!! We have to serve something new, not only different. We need to walk extra miles to understand the path beyond predetermined requirements. I prefer to set goals stepwise: first I write my highest goal, the final aim. Next, I plan my path and break it in several parts; We humans are blessed with common sense which guides us best. So go ahead enjoy expanding your boundaries! Enjoy your growth! Enjoy the journey.
